Ascendance is looking for a new Senior Propulsion Architect.

Who are they?

Ascendance is building tomorrow’s hybrid-electric aviation with ATEA, a unique Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft powered by STERNA, their in-house hybrid propulsion system. They focus their efforts in designing an innovative, safe, silent, clean and affordable aircraft that will be able to blend into existing infrastructures and regulations to ease its deployment and maximise social acceptance.

Your role:

They are seeking a highly experienced and visionary Senior Propulsion Architect to join their dynamic team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the design, development, and integration of advanced propulsion systems, specifically focusing on their flagship hybrid propulsion product, STERNA. This position requires a deep understanding of hybrid-electric propulsion technologies, system architecture, and aerospace engineering principles. The role also involves product ownership, ensuring the successful application of STERNA within third-party aircraft.

Your missions will be to:

  • Lead the design and development of the STERNA hybrid propulsion system for new and existing aircraft platforms.
  • Define system requirements, architecture, and interfaces for propulsion components, including engines, electric motors, batteries, and control systems. A strong focus and expertise is expected on the integration of the thermal engine.
  • Oversee the integration of the STERNA propulsion system into the overall aircraft design, ensuring optimal performance, safety, and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Manage product ownership responsibilities, focusing on the application of STERNA within third-party aircraft, ensuring compatibility and performance excellence.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including aerodynamics, avionics, structures, and manufacturing, to ensure seamless integration and alignment of the STERNA propulsion system with aircraft requirements.
  • Conduct trade studies, simulations, and analysis to evaluate performance, efficiency, and reliability of the STERNA propulsion system.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes to ensure Ascendance Flight Technologies remains at the cutting edge of propulsion system development.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, proposals, and documentation to internal and external stakeholders.

Full scale testbenches are ongoing while full scale aircraft development is running at full speed.

The job has been made for you if you have:

  • Master’s or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in propulsion system integration, with a focus on hybrid-electric or electric propulsion technologies or a proven track record in the integration of thermal engine in challenging environments.
  • Proven track record of leading complex propulsion projects from concept to implementation.
  • In-depth knowledge of propulsion system components, including mostly thermal engines, electric motors, batteries, power electronics, and control systems.
  • Experience with product ownership and the integration of propulsion systems within third-party aircraft is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in using simulation and analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, ANSYS).
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Fluent in English; proficiency in French is a plus.
